The big question is, "How do I identify them?" The answer is simple: people who always patronize you, share your vision, put your business first, anticipate and participate in all your engagements. Identifying your target audience is your business' number one task because its success or failure comes down to finding its target audience.

You may insist your target audience is all girls or boys or anyone that has money, but the sad truth is you can't target everyone.

If you are in this category, then you should avoid it if you want a long-term business.

Selling to everyone is the same as selling to no one.

"It's just like advertising a house worth 40 million dollars to a teenage student or selling food at a wedding party."

You can say, "I sell both male and female clothes, so obviously, my target audiences are both male and female."

Yes, but you can't sell it to all the males and females in this world. You still need to look closely at your business and narrow it down to those males and females your business is concerned about.

Let's cut to the chase, and get right to how you sell to the right audience.

This is narrower than your target market. They are known as your potential customers. They are a group of people you want to sell to or to whom you address your products or services. It is classified into:

Social class - (how they interact online and offline)

Relationship status: single, married or divorced.

When you identify your audience, all your marketing, promotion, and advertising become easier because you are passing the right message specifically to the right set of people, which will result in business growth or sales.

Targeting a larger set of people—that is, both your target audience and those who don't need your service—may result in their listening but not buying or converting because they may not find it useful, and your target audience may not buy because your message is too broad to speak directly to them.

So, how then do we identify our target audience?

This is not an easy task, and that's why I have broken it down into these few steps.

These are people that represent your business.

One way to find them is through your social media handles. It could be on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc.

You can see that specific group of people under either of these categories by checking the comment section, likes follow, and shares.

It doesn't matter if they are active or not, buy or sign up, as long as they show some sign of interest on your social site, you can consider them as your target audience.

After identifying that person or set of people, the next step is to learn what they are struggling with.

It's all about your customer and not how awesome your product is.

So create a relatable or believable challenge they are likely to face or ask them directly (word of mouth) if you already have customers.

The goal here is to tap into your audience's greatest pain points so you can communicate with empathy and provide a solution.

We all need information and seek it somewhere.

Your job is to find out where your target audience seeks information online. It could be on YouTube, a blog post, or on Twitter, and it could be in a specific language or tone.

"Use the potential pain point you've identified and provide a solution on the platform where they seek information."

It will be a great conversion for your business.

Everyone seeks answers or solutions to their problems.

Think a little about your product and the problem it solves. What benefits does your product or service offer? What can it do to solve those problems? What is the main value offer?

Is it to reduce weight, to make more sales, or to give more confidence to thick women in fashion clothes?

Whatever it is that your brand is providing should be clearly stated to them.

Also, provide a unique selling point to be different from your competitors.

e.g. Netflix has a subscription-based service while Netnaija can be downloaded for free.

No one wants to buy from someone they don't trust, and that's why your service should be excellent. If you are offering a delivery service and promise to deliver in 3 days, it should be 3 days or less. If your brand is to sell quality clothes, then so shall it be?

They will always give positive reviews and recommend you to their friends and family.

Your company or brand will benefit greatly from knowing who your target audience is because doing so will enable you to focus your efforts on who is most in need of your products or services.

I've noticed some wrong business misconceptions, especially about clothing lines entrepreneurs like you make. 

Predicting how much profit they desire from their product and that's it, without taking factors like product quality, target customers, location, etc into consideration.
As a result, you could profit or loss as a result of overcharging or undercharging your product.

Likewise, copying your competitor's pricing strategies. 
Don't get me wrong, it's acceptable to consider your competitors' prices before assessing your own, but you shouldn't use their exact price because it may not always be effective.

What if their pricing method does not fit your business, 
for instance - after analyzing your expenses and you found out that you ran at a loss because you spent more than your competitors in buying that product.

Do you just mope around and wait for miracles to happen?

If you are following these approaches you are at a high risk of losing.
The truth is everyone has that unique *pricing strategy* that suits them, it's all up to you to figure out yours.

 So let's cut the chase and get down to business.

Pricing is the amount of money that you charge for your products after evaluating all your expenses for that product.

 It's one of the first things that can push a customer towards, or away from, buying your product. 

However, it should be calculated strictly.

As simple as it seems, it's one of the most important aspects of your business you shouldn't joke about. 

There are several factors to consider while deciding on a price.

 You can't just base your product's price on how you feel.

Importance factors to consider when setting price

Before setting a price, it's important you understand your market, that is, become familiar with your target customers on how they buy, the price they are comfortably willing to pay, and the quality of your product.

Try and understand your competitors in terms of the product you are setting a price on, how they set theirs and why they are using that pricing method or price range.

Also, determine the product trends as well; if you are selling that hot trendy fashion item, you may want to raise your price because they are in high demand. However, this relies on whether the trend is temporary or long-term.

Doing this will provide you with the market information you need to make pricing strategy decisions. Whether you are planning to increase your price or thinking to price a new product, research is the key to an effective pricing strategy.

Find Out Your Business Fixed & Variable Costs

This is another important aspect most business owners ignore. You don't just go about and use the amount you bought a product, add the profit you want to make to determine your selling price. 

You simply need to write down every dollar you spend on your business, you must be aware of your business expenses. That's where the fixed price and the variable price come into play. 

Fixed costs remain the same no matter the number of products you sell. Rent, insurance, loan payments, and employee salaries are a few examples.

Variable costs change with the number of products you sell. They include packaging, delivery, or the cost of goods sold(COGS).

These totals combine with the other money you used to buy the product. That is the purchase price of the item, the delivery cost (if any), any required service fees, and any applicable fees for handcrafted items.

For example, suppose you order six raw materials to make shoes and make them yourself.

Divide the price of a single order of raw materials by the number of products that can be produced from that order.

You must understand these factors before developing your pricing plan because your business will fail if you don't make a profit.

Set Your Business Volume & Branding Goals

What level of income style, profits, and sales volume goals do you have in mind? Is it high prices with low sales volume or low prices with large sales volume?

Although a profitable firm can be built using either approach.

Secondly, how do you want your customers to see your brand? If you sell at low prices, you will position your brand as a place for buying cheap products and vice versa.

Pricing must align with your store’s branding strategy and desired position in the minds of consumers.

Once more, think about your target audience before deciding

You also want to consider the quality of your product or services. 

It all depends on what you have because increasing your price without providing high-quality products will push your customers away and move to your competitors. This approach is tagged as bad business.

It is crucial to understand your target customers: 

If so, you might want to adjust your price to fit their budget.

Alternatively, it's possible that your buyers want high-quality items with a classy taste. You don't want them to see your brand as cheap or fake because your price is too cheap, especially if the quality meets up to their standard. 

My point is you need to understand your target customers before considering your price

Now we know what to consider before setting the price.

How to set price using markup pricing method

This involves taking the amount a product costs you, the business, then adding on top the amount of profit you want, expressed in a percentage of the final selling price.

For example, if your product costs you #100 and you want to make #66 for every sale, your final selling price would be #166. That’s a 40% gross profit margin.

the markup is 66% because #166 is 66% of #166.

Discount right…. Yeah…it's common😉

Offering discounts has been one of the most popular strategies small or large business owners do to make sales, get new customers, and make a profit. 

If you haven't tried it, you should, but before you get too excited, there are a few things you need to know.

The desire to make more sales is normal for sellers, but one mistake you shouldn't make is giving a discount before understanding how it works. This is because of the possibility that you won't gain any or enough profit.

Discounts can determine your profit and also help you attract customers. As exciting as it is, it can ruin you when not done properly. 

Imagine offering a discount of 1500 on a product whose selling price was 7000. Although people will buy it, two outcomes are likely to happen.

Either the customer who paid the original selling price will be upset that they paid such a high amount and won't want to buy from you again thinking you were not honest about your price, or


You run at so much loss just trying to please customers.

Discount is not something you magically set on a product and Boom!... SALES!!!

Instead, it is something you sit down to understand the market and know what you want to achieve after sales before trying it out. You may say, " I don't need to. I have run my product on discount before and it turned out great," but maybe it wasn't great the way it should be. 

Giving discounts isn't just about making more profit; there's more to that.

I'm going to show you the different strategies you should use to set your discount and how to set a discount price.

But before that, let's see what discount means.

As we all know, a discount is the reduction of the amount of a product. As much as it makes your customers feel good about your business, it can make them leave.

So, first and foremost, you should always have a goal and set objectives before deciding on a discount price for your product.

Are you doing it for the sake of having new customers?

Rewarding or acquiring current customers?

Increase your sales or get rid of old inventory?

And then know the different approaches (strategies) you can take to achieve these goals.

Select the kind of pricing discount that complements your sale or discount once you've determined your goal Here are some common discount strategies. Always keep in mind that you don't have to select one strategy at a time. For the same promotional deal, you can apply a variety of discounts.


This tactic increases buying decisions like magic. I call it the Combo. With this technique, you bundle some goods together and reduce the price rather than lowering the selling price of one item or service.

If you run a boutique, for instance, you could combine together the gown, a bag, and a pair of slippers and then set your discount price on those grouped things rather than having a discount price on just the gown as you know consumers will always require a purse or shoes.


Another way is to offer free shipping delivery to your customers without losing any money. You can call it a "free shipping day".  There are various ways to accomplish this:

Add the cost of the shipping fee to your product price without your customers knowing they are paying for it. 

Free shipping can be used to gain loyal customers. By using it to reward them, you will only be sponsoring the delivery for your loyal customers. Also, you can give them on special occasions like Christmas or Valentine's Day. It motivates them to buy from you next time.

Offer free shipping fees to get rid of old inventories.

This strategy encourages clients to make larger purchases.

Seasonal Discount
This tends to happen around a specific period. You can use it to run Christmas sales, Valentine's sales, anniversary sales, etc.
During this period, people tend to have the mindset of buying, so you can use this opportunity to give offers, deals, or discounts and acquire new customers.



We all enjoy receiving free items, thus this is recognized as the Buy One Get One Free offer. In other words, this approach encourages buyers or customers to buy without hesitation. It's just like getting rewarded for buying your own thing.

All of these tactics can be used as guides to help you achieve your objectives. 

The majority of top sellers have tested them out and provided positive reviews.

It's all up to you to find out what works best for you and try out as many strategies as possible.

After knowing your strategies, the next thing is for you to understand how to set your discount price.

What I'm about to show you right now is one of the easiest and quickest ways to calculate discounts.

However, discount can be calculated either by

Amount/fixed price - Reduce the selling price by any amount you choose. For example, if a shoe is sold for 5000, you can give an N500 discount, which means you will be selling that product for 4,500.


Percentage - This means that you're calculating your discounts by percentages. This is the most common and basic way to calculate a discount.

For example, you might want to calculate the sale price of a pair of shoes you bought for N3000 with your profit of N2000. That's the N5000 selling price.
If the shoes are 25% off, you need to convert 25% to a decimal.
 That is, 25% = 0.25

Multiply the normal selling price by the percentage
5000 x 0.25 = 1250

Subtract your selling price into your discount price
5000 - 1250 = 3750

So, the N5000 shoes are on sale for N3750.

Note this: Do not just guess your percentage discount because it may be lower than your selling price e.g. 50% of your selling price is 5000 × 0.50 = 2500

which is lower than your purchase price. This is a lot of loss.

No matter the decision you take at this moment, always remember to set your goals before offering a discount price. If you do this correctly, your sales could grow by 50% or even 100%, which could be the best thing that has ever happened to you.
